The problem
A live site that cannot go down, slowed by huge icon and CSS files loaded on every page.
Overview
An Arabic WordPress site for an interior design studio in Riyadh. I took over vds.sa while it was live, worked under a signed, fully prepaid contract, and delivered 55 of 58 tasks across development, performance and maintenance.
What I built
- Icon CSS from 170,232 to 1,342 bytes and the icon font from 569,672 to 880 bytes across 15 pages
- Render-blocking CSS from 16,674 to 5,946 bytes, 64% less, with zero differing pixels across 10 templates
- Every change shipped as an mu-plugin, so rolling anything back means deleting one file
- Nothing is written to the client’s database without an explicit decision
The engineering call
The first critical-CSS attempt passed every programmatic check and broke the live header, because a misclassified rule started loading after the one it was meant to lose to. The rule I took away: measure in pixels, not bytes. The second attempt shipped with zero pixel difference.
