The problem
Counts were done on paper and retyped later. Losses surfaced late, and nobody could tell who counted what, or when.
Overview
A web app that behaves like a phone app for stock counts at a two-branch restaurant in Saudi Arabia, in production since 19 September 2026. Staff count on a one-handed keypad, data lands in Google Sheets through Apps Script, and item names show in Arabic and Bengali because part of the team is from Bangladesh.
What I built
- A one-handed keypad with morning, evening and weekly counts
- An offline count queue on the phone that syncs when the connection returns
- Every sheet write happens inside a lock, and columns are read by name, not position
- An audit trail, loss alerts and printable, shareable reports
- 4 roles: admin, accountant, employee and tool
The engineering call
I set a hard budget for the entire front end: 40 KB gzipped, because staff open it on mid-range phones over weak kitchen Wi-Fi. The counting logic lives in one shared file kept byte-identical between phone and server, so a number can never differ between the two.
